What is Martyns’s Law?

Martyn’s Law, formally known as the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025, is expected to come into force during 2027. The legislation will require those responsible for publicly accessible premises to consider the risk of terrorism and implement proportionate measures to help protect staff, visitors and members of the public.

For many schools, colleges, healthcare facilities and commercial premises, this will include reviewing emergency procedures and ensuring effective lockdown arrangements are in place. Integrated access control, emergency lockdown systems, CCTV and staff communication systems can all play an important role in supporting a rapid and coordinated response during a security incident.

Mere UK designs, installs and maintains integrated lockdown systems that help organisations strengthen their security, improve emergency preparedness and support compliance with the requirements of Martyn’s Law.

Why Regular Servicing Matters

Protecting Vulnerable Individuals – Security systems are often the first line of defence against unauthorised access and play a key role in safeguarding vulnerable people. A faulty gate, malfunctioning access control system or failed CCTV camera can create significant security risks.

Reducing Operational Risk – Equipment naturally deteriorates over time. Regular servicing helps identify faults before they become failures, reducing disruption, emergency repair costs and system downtime.

Supporting Compliance Requirements – Public sector organisations are subject to a range of health and safety, safeguarding, data protection, and security obligations. While specific requirements vary by organisation and installation, there is increasing emphasis on ensuring critical safety and security systems are properly maintained, inspected, and documented.

Maintaining Evidential Integrity – In the event of an incident, CCTV footage may form part of an investigation or legal process. Poor maintenance can result in degraded image quality, recording failures or system outages that compromise valuable evidence.

Protecting Investment – Security systems represent a significant investment. Planned preventative maintenance helps maximise asset life, improve performance and reduce the likelihood of costly replacement programmes.
